Big Fat Winner

I've been drinking Diet Pepsi lately. Specifically bottles of Diet Pepsi that have yellow caps with codes that allow me to enter sweepstakes at TransformYourSummer.com. That's Pepsi's cross promotional Transformers: The Movie website. LOTS of prizes there... kind of an interesting way of entering too. Each code equals one "point" you can use to enter one of several different sweepstakes. Some of the sweeps have small prizes but LOTS of winners (800 Winners a day will win Yahoo! music downloads). Others offer fewer chances to win, but much larger prizes (1 Winner a day will win the Ultimate Gaming Package or a trip). My entry plan was to enter the bulk of my "points" into a midrange prize, and occasionally spend a point or two on the big prizes. A couple days ago this arrived via UPS:

Pretty cool no? They give away 20 of these every day... which seems like a lot, but when you consider that today at 4pm eastern time 10368 points had already been spent by other people in order to try and win this prize, I feel pretty lucky.

I considered holding on to it because it can be used as a webcam, but ultimately it's not something I need. I certainly don't need a $250 webcam. So it's up for auction. Good win. I'd hit a bit of a dry spell so it was nice to get some positive reinforcement to keep at it.

P.S. I haven't given up on Coke. In fact I'm up to 4484 points at My Coke Rewards.

Oprah's Bounty

click--->WIN A ROOMBA<---click

So a little ways back I mentioned that I had won some cool stuff from Oprah. Usually I save up all my winning for one post in the beginning of a new month, but this is from Oprah y'all... Oprah waits for no one.

It arrived with no fanfare at all... just a soft "thump" outside my door 'round Noon. No overture, no entourage, not even a knock at the door. Frankly I expected a package from Oprah to be delivered by Angels carrying it on a cloud pillow. Followed by a team from the Treasury Department and a string quartet joined by a choir singing in soprano tones, "yooouuuu get a caaaaarrrr and yooouuuuu get a caaaarrrr and YOU get a CAAAAAAARRRRRRR!" But no, today Oprah was being subtle. Today she sent only one messenger to deliver her bounty, a stealthy Representative who disappeared before I could even say, "May Oprah bless you."

First thing I noticed is that Oprah OF COURSE recycled the box she sent her bounty in. Was Why We Love a book club selection?

Upon opening Oprah's Ark of the Complimentary I found this first... a gym bag from a company called LUG. It looks purple here but it's actually brown. Clearly a woman's bag never-the-less... hopefully my Mom will want it.

INSIDE the LUG Puddle Jumper Gym Bag I found this Handy little "Do Not Forget!" doorhanger. There were no instructions, but from what I can gather, one hangs it on a doorknob (convenient hole included) and then one puts coupons or mail or other important things that one does not want to forget when one is leaving the house. It even has a small clip that one could attach car keys to! Smart really, as long as you remember to hang it on the INSIDE of your door. Thing is I already installed my shelf for key, wallet, change, Work ID and outgoing mail. So not sure what to do with the door hanger.

Next to appear were the bowls from the Bauer Pottery Company. Each carefully and individually hand wrapped by Oprah herself. Unfortunately the red one did not fare as well as it's brothers. Maybe she let Steadman wrap that one. I've named him Chip.

Here's my attempt at a display of all of Oprah's bounty in one shot. I really should go into "staging":

The big part of this particular prize will be seeing my suggestion for how to get a "Great Start" appear as part of an "advertorial" in an upcoming edition of "O, The Oprah Magazine."

So now you know what to expect when Oprah sends YOU a box of stuff!

Of course, I'm having some fun with this... I'm DEFINITELY not gloating. And I doubt Oprah herself had anything to do with this box o goodies. This is one of those wins that ends up being more fun or funny than anything else. Thought y'all might get a kick out of it!

Oprah is sending me a box of stuff!

Well, one of her minions is sending me a box of stuff anyway... but before we get to the main event, here are some of my other wins for April:

- $10 Old Navy Gift Card.

- "The Game Of Life" Board Game from First Horizon Bank.

- An Enchanted Call from the Walt Disney Movie Rewards program (gave that to P's brother for his grand daughter).

- A ringtone from Skittles (by the way, I can't use this so if anyone wants it just let me know).

-An apron from the Caribou Coffee Wild Adventure Instant Win Game. Yes an apron. Not a very "wild" prize if you ask me.

And now... Oprah! Kellogg's Smart Start cereal had a contest (which is different than a sweepstakes by the way) in which people had to write a short essay about how they get a smart start to their day. Here's the email Oprah sent me:

Congratulations! You’re submission was one of the top ten submissions in our Start Smart Contest. You have won a collection of prizes from The O List including a set of four bowls from Bauer Pottery Company, a Monkey Business Doorganizer, and a LUG Puddle Jumper Overnight/Gym Bag--a $158 retail value! In addition, an excerpt from your winning submission will be published in an advertorial in O, The Oprah Magazine.

So that's kind of cool. The letter isn't actually from Miss O of course, but I'm telling people that it is. I'm also telling people that she personally selected my submission out of the tens of millions that were sent in. That's probably not true, but that's what I'm telling people. Sue me.

What was my winning submission? You can read [an excerpt from] it in the July issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. It involves the snooze button and stretching.

You too can be featured in an upcoming issue. Right now O, The Oprah Magazine and GE are sponsoring a contest called Confessions from the Kitchen. Just submit your deepest, darkest kitchen secret and you could win a GE Appliance and be excerpted in O, The Oprah Magazine. Good Luck!

Podcasts

Today I have a weird work day... only have to go in for a couple of hours in the evening. That gives me a little extra time during the day to enter some long neglected mail-in sweepstakes (those are them in the pic above) AND catch up with a bunch of podcasts that I subscribe to, but don't always have time to listen to.

One of my favorites is the NPR Story of the Day podcast where I learned more about the new "Super Earth" found in the constellation: Libra. I REALLY want to go there, it sounds wonderful.

I also listened to my first episode of The Mopod Show where I learned that I have a little crush on Rufus, or at least his voice.

While catching up on missed episodes of Jason Bellini's Here and Now podcast from LOGO I learned that he has just adopted two very adorable puppies. You really need to see the video, they are cute. I ALSO learned that I THINK Jason is dating Will Wikle from Big Brother and that Will now works at a hospital. Who knew!? By the way, get that podcast from iTunes... the Logo site is S L O W, at least on my mac.

I'm a big new fan of Ragan Fox's show Fox and the City. Today he introduced me to a Pussy Pilot and read a HYSTERICAL poem about what it's like to go to school at Arizona State University (sounds a LOT like Washington State by the way). This is really good show in my opinion. He is very smart and very funny and that show is TIGHT as a drum, edited to within an inch of it's life.

Jason, Chuck and Kevin on Jive Talkin' entertained me with tales of Clothing Optional vacations and introduced me to some Musical Theater I'd not heard of before. Y'all are going to have to let me know where the name for your show came from because as the old lady on "Airplane!" said, "You ain't Jive." You're entertaining, but Jive?

I went back and found the very first episode of A Shanty No Lemon to find out why it's called that... I still have no idea. Something about an anagram generator I think.

Dan Savage and his callers made me very uncomfortable (in a good way).

Who needs TV?

Tease...

I'll have a pretty big sweepstakes related announcement to make next month. It's not a big financial windfall, but fans of one prominent daytime talk show host who's name begins with "O" might find it pretty cool!

The Patient Sweeper

'Member back in January I mentioned that I had won something that I felt was worthy of a little fanfare?

Well, it's here! Let me take you on the long strange trip it took on it's way though...

On Monday January 22nd I got an email that read:
"Congratulations! You have been selected to receive a prize by registering in the iCush Crank Up The Game Instant Win and Sweepstakes, administered by ePrize.

You have won a PlayStation 3. Please see the attached Official Rules for further prize details and eligibility requirements. You will be receiving your prize in the mail 8-10 weeks after we receive your email.
"

WOO HOO! I'm not a big gamer, but It's an expensive toy and I could eBay it or hang on to it for the Blu-Ray DVD player. Either way, win-win.

8 to 10 weeks always seems excessive to me... I don't understand why it takes so long to ship a prize but whatever, I'm getting some free stuff, I shouldn't complain about how long it takes to get here.

On February 21st I get this email:
"Dear winner,

Due to the popularity of the prize you’ve won, we are offering a prize substitute of a $500 Game Stop gift card. This way, you are able to purchase the prize once it becomes available or purchase other similar gaming items. The gift card will be mailed to you within the next 2 weeks...
"

So I guess there is no magical sweepstakes prize vault filled with Plasma TVs, pallettes of cash, Corvettes, iPods, Boats and PS3's that they can just go in and get the prize from... OR maybe there is and it is SO MASSIVE that it takes 8 to 10 weeks to find the prize they are looking for. Like that giant government warehouse at the end of Indiana Jones.

Finally today, almost EXACTLY 8 weeks since this all began I had a certified letter in my mailbox containing this:

So... my PS3 has turned into a $500 giftcard which I can use to buy anything GAME STOP or EB GAMES sells. Any suggestions?

More Wierd Sweepstakes Trips

Remember the Trip to Greater Des Moines I entered to win last week? Well AAA Magazines is trying to out do the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau with a couple swell trips of their own.

How about a trip to Mackinaw City! Where you'll "enjoy unlimited fun to Mackinac Island on a Mackinac Island Ferry, Fort Mackinac, Historic Mill Creek, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, Colonial Michilimackinac and Thunder Falls Family Waterpark!" What state is Mackinaw City in?

If that's too much excitement for you why not enter to win a trip to KANSAS! You choose between 4 getaways: Wichita, Topeka, Hays or Emporia!

Then again for the REAL THRILL SEEKER go ahead and enter for your chance to win a week in North Dakota! This trip includes stops in Fargo, Bismark AND Medora where you may choose to use your "two tickets to the famous outdoor Pitchfork Steal Fondue."

Feeling Lucky!?

I'm sure that all these places are actually very nice, and in reality I would probably enjoy a trip to any of them. Be forewarned however, these trips do not include airfare or any other transportation AND you will likely end up on a mailing list which will result in HUGE brochure packets for these (and neighboring) cities and towns clogging up your postal mailbox.

People come to Atlanta on vacation which makes no sense to me... I mean there's stuff to do here... but Atlanta? Really? I guess if you have run out of other major American metropolitan areas then maybe... but Atlanta? Atlanta has attractions that are kind of secondary... that is, you'd go to them IF you were already here for a convention or an event, but you wouldn't plan a trip just to do or see any of them. I wouldn't anyway.

On another note... I am approaching my 100th post and I'm not sure how I should mark that milestone, if at all. Any suggestions or recommendations on what to put in my 100th post?

P.S. - thanks to the good folks at CashNet Sweepstakes for turning me on to the AAA Magazine Sweepstakes. There are a few REALLY GOOD SWEEPSTAKES RUNNING RIGHT NOW so if you are FEELING LUCKY try your hand at one of em!

Least Tempting Sweepstakes Prize EVER

Came home from work and found this in my mailbox:

I'm up for a trip to just about anywhere... but... Greater Des Moines? For a whole WEEKEND!?

I have to admit, for a town of just over 500,000 it DOES have a pretty impressive skyline. Do YOU live in Iowa, or better still Greater Des Moines? Should I enter?

I love how they've qualified it, "Greater Des Moines." Lest I think I might be entering to win a trip to the outskirts of town. That's adorable.

Des Moines IS home to Adventureland and I do love a theme park!

OK... I'm going to enter... I'm helpless against this addiction. I've hunted high and low and can't even find the "official rules" to this one so I'm not even certain what all the prize includes. Airfare? Meals? Is it a trip for two? I'm assuming hotel accomodations at least are part of the package. I'd give you the link to enter as well, but this one is mail-in only and it has to be postmarked today! So unless you got one of these babies in the mail too, yer out of luck!

See Ya in IOWA!

Free in February

On the hobby front I did have a decent month...

I won one of the 2nd prizes offered in the "Hit the Road with the Hawks" sweepstakes:

Two tickets to sit in a catered luxury box to watch the Hawks take on the 76ers next month. I can't go, but my good friend and her buddy are going to enjoy them on my behalf.

I was also surprised when a FedEx dude knocked on my door with a package containing this:

I was one of a few Grand Prize winners in the General Mills "Go-Gurt" Nintendo Sweepstakes. Pretty cool. Not sure what is going to become of this. I don't need it and I don't know anyone who does. I think eBay will have a new listing soon.

The big sweeps prize I teased you with a few weeks ago is on the way, but not in the form I imagined. The sponsor is having problems getting their hands on the actual prize, so instead they are shipping me a gift card with which I can purchase my own. It should be here in two weeks... I'll let y'all know what it was/is then.

Not a sweeps win, but a nice surprise none the less from Metrotainment Cafes arrived day before yesterday. I must have filled out a survey or something after dining out because they sent me a $25 gift card for my birthday (still over a month away). Metrotainment Cafes operates several local restaurants in the ATL. Big fan of the "Kinda Fulton, Kinda Cobb" salad" at Joe's on Juniper (Fulton and Cobb are both counties in the Atlanta area)... so that will definitely come in handy!

Last AND least, but oddly enough the one prize of all these I will actually get the most use out of: A coupon for Clorox Disinfecting Wipes valued at as much as $3.49. Apparently I was a winner in the "Clorox Disinfecting Wipes - Open the Door to Clean" game.

So... still waiting on the big one... but not a bad month for free stuff!

We didn't have hydrogen cars when I was in High School

The "H-racer" is going to a new home:

Re: Hydrogen "toy" car offer
To: "[Condoblogger]"
From: "[Nice High School Science Teacher Lady]"

Thank you so much for your generous offer, Mr. [Condoblogger]! I would definitely be interested in the Hydrogen car. It would fit perfectly into my environmental science curriculum as we do a unit on conventional and alternative sources of energy, and hydrogen fuel is one of the alternatives we look at.

If it's not too much trouble for you to drop it off, that would be great. Thank you again for the offer!

Sincerely,
[Nice High School Science Teacher Lady]

My booty...

...or loot, as some might say, has arrived!

The first of my two sweepstakes wins has come to fruition. Today I received a box full of toys from the Wired Store in NYC. I was the winner of their December 8th Pink Light special sweepstakes! As such I was awarded some really cool stuff:

The big thing on the bottom is a remote controlled helicopter! On top and on the right side of the picture is an i-Dog (ironically I KIND of made fun of this toy not too long ago). Finally in the upper left is the coolest and least useful of the three toys... it is the H-racer: "The world's smallest hydrogen car." It even comes with it's own hydrogen producing fueling station! Yes, in addition to my usual carbon monoxide and methane gas generation I will soon be producing my own HYDROGEN!

Let me also say here that I appreciate the fact that I am 38 years old, and in no way need a remote controlled helicopter or a dancing dog or a toy hydrogen car. I am however a total sci-fi/gadget geek** and it's going to be hard to part with any of them!

A couple of weird things about this particular sweepstakes:

1. My prize was sent VERY quickly after I was notified. There is usually a ridiculously long waiting period till prizes are shipped. I do not know the reason for this, but it's usually the case. I waited months and months for my Treo to ship.

2. They have put me in a slightly awkward position. The official rules for this sweepstakes indicate that there is a 4th prize that should have been awarded as part of this package. These three awesomely cool toys and another less "toy-like" item. So now it's up to me to come up with a cool way to say, "Hey, thanks for all the bitchin' stuff, but you forgot to include the other free thing. I'm a greedy bastard and I want it!" I may or may not mention it when I email to say that the box arrived and that it's all cool stuff, it does kind of irk me.

And now, I present you with... THE MOST BORING TEASE EVER WRITTEN:

Next time: Homeowners Association Meeting Highlights!

**Speaking of Sci-Fi geek, did y'all catch the sweaty biceps on Apollo the other night!? Damn!
