R.I.P. Mac

I suspected something was wrong yesterday... she wasn't acting like herself. She DID have a healthy appetite, but her swimming seemed labored and she was staying closer to the bottom of her bowl than usual.

When I went to feed her this morning, she was gone.

The pic above is Mac in happier days.

Mac was a housewarming/Christmas gift from "P's" mom and is actually named in honor of her. M A C are "P's" mom's initials.

When Mac first came home to this new condo last Christmas I was very nervous about having a life to care for, but she quickly put me at ease, settling into her new surroundings quite nicely.

For a fish, I think she lived a good life. Other than freedom or companionship, I don't think she really wanted for anything while in my care. I worried about the solitude she must feel being all alone in her bowl, but she seemed to enjoy her alone time as much as I do. Mac had clean water, plenty of food and even a little ceramic rock fort... I can let her go knowing that the past 6 months, her last 6 months, were pretty luxurious.

Now, Mac's spirit is at rest, her body is on a new adventure and her bowl is in the dishwasher.

I think the best way to honor Mac would be to rescue some other little swimmer from it's cramped quarters in a Pet-Smart tank. So, who should move into the bowl now? Another betta? Maybe one one of Mac's more flamboyant male counterparts? How about a species that would tolerate tankmates? Do any of y'all have fish?

I don't know what kind of fish you should get, but that's sure a cool bowl!

I don't want to sound cruel, but MAC's former home would make a great candy dish.

If only to honor her!

I have been eyeing bettas for some time now, but I am already overwhelmed by the animals that live here. You don't want a geriatric albino guinea pig, do you?

Okay, I'll be the sappy one ... sorry about MAC. Sometimes even things like fish can have some kind of impact on you.

Bettas are very cool, and better as solitary fish. I always want to rescue the ones in those tiny cups at PetCo ...

Aww, sorry to hear about your loss.
I would put jelly beans in the bowl;)

I used to have fish, but I kept killing them. I was once referred to as The Charles Manson of Fish Owners.

I have tons of fish, but not the pretty kind... I have an electric catfish (he's HUGE and the fucker electrocuted me once, numbing me arm at the elbow for 10 minutes), an African bichir, a spiny eel, and three black-tipped shark catfish. Yeah, I'm a fish dork. No wonder I don't have a boyfriend.

LP - Thanks! The bowl was actually the gift, MAC just came along as a "bonus."

Paul - trust me, my fat ass does not need any candy laying around...

Mist - I had a hampster once... it hated me. I've been off adorable rodents since.

Matt - I THINK the females can live together... but I might just go for a couple small goldfish, even though they are poop machines.

Jason - again, candy not a good option for me... I ate a whole bag of Jelly Bellys (they are having a sweepstakes by the way) that I snuck into the movies the other day. Imagine my size if I had a giant bowl of them just laying around all the time. Plus I'd just pick out all the root beer and buttered popcorn flavored ones.

Rey - those all actually sound really cool! But I'm looking for something that doesn't require a swimming pool sized tank... or an electrician. :)

I have a week long trip coming up in a couple weeks so no matter what goes in there it will have to wait till after I get back...

Cute bowl.

I used to have fishies. They all die in the end. It's my goal in life to be outlived by a goldfish.
